We interviewed AMD's Dr. Lisa Su at CES! You can read the interview here! Update Feb 1st : Thank you everyone for waiting - when this was initially posted, illness stopped me writing past page two.
This article has now been updated to cover the rest of AMD's announcements:. To mark the start of the annual CES trade show, AMD invited the press in early to sample the latest technologies coming to its portfolio in What was quite surprising is how much AMD exposed about their plans fordetailing several product lines and launch times well in advance, with some blanks to be filled in later.
To say AMD had a busy was an understatement. It will be interesting to see it all play out in practice. With this in mind, it was surprising to see AMD discuss a lot of its roadmap in the Tech Day setting. While most of the roadmap could have been predicted by those of us embedded in this industry, it was good to see AMD volunteering a lot of information.
For most of these, we were given a good amount of information, which we will go into in the following pages. These mobile-class discrete GPUs are optimized for z-height, coming in at 1.Peter falconio reddit
HBM2 is still a premium product, so we expect that when they come to market in Q2, they will aim for thin and light systems that also want to support VR-like technologies. Also on the list is perhaps the surprise announcement of the day: AMD will be bringing Vega to 7nm, with customer sampling expected to start in This ultimately means that Vega on 7nm will hit the shelves inbut there is a twist to the tale.
The first products off the line will be solely for the Radeon Instinct family and machine learning. Users who want 7nm desktop-class products will have to wait a little longer, but it does give an indication of how GlobalFoundries 7nm process is coming along. The latest outlook is pretty much similar to what we have seen before.
For the x86 processor line, AMD delivered Zen based on 14nm in AMD confirmed that the Zen 2 design is already completemuch to the surprise of the people in attendance. This typically means that the floorplan is fundamentally ready to go to, although minor adjustments will still need to be made as the manufacturing process is improved, optimized, and potential silicon bugs are found. In the announcements, AMD is not announcing anything Zen 2 related, so it firmly puts Zen 2 into the bucket.
This also gives some indication of when GlobalFoundries expects to implement 7nm at scale. Finally, AMD expects to implement Zen 3 by The beginning of will see Vega push into more APUs in mobile on the desktop, and into the discrete GPU mobile space, however no separate mainstream graphics products seem to be on the horizon. This will likely lead to a Radeon Instinct product, initially perhaps with a small die size, being made available in early Given the timeframe here, Navi is certainly a product, although it might be debatable if that means early or late This would align with Zen 3 on the CPU side.
If we took the worst case scenario that this Next-Gen design ends up in Decemberthen this gives a slight indication of how AMD would release Navi.AMD for desktop, mobile and embedded platforms based on the Zen microarchitecture and its successors. It consists of central processing units marketed for mainstream, enthusiast and workstation segments and accelerated processing units APUs marketed for mainstream and entry-level segments and embedded applications.
Ryzen is especially significant for AMD, since it is a completely new design, and since it marks the corporation's return to the high end desktop CPU market. AMD officially announced the first 14nm Ryzen products during its New Horizon summit on December 13, and introduced them the following February with the first processors being 8-core, 16 thread CPUs released in March 2 to public market availability.
While the majority of Ryzen-branded products are for use with the Socket AM4 platform, in August AMD added a line of high core count desktop processors aimed at the workstation market with the Ryzen Threadripper branding.
In the five years before the release of Ryzen, AMD's direct competitor in the x86 and x consumer-level CPU marketspace, Intelhad continued to grow its market share with the tick-tock improvement cycle of its Core series of microprocessors. Ryzen is the consumer-level implementation of the newer Zen microarchitecturea complete re-design that marked the return of AMD to the high-end CPU market, offering a product stack able to compete with Intel at every level.
Threadripper, which is geared for high end desktops HEDTwasn't developed as part of a business plan or a specific roadmap; instead a small enthusiast team inside AMD saw an opportunity that something could be developed between the Ryzen and Epyc cpu roadmaps that would put the crown of performance on AMD.
After some progress was made in their spare time the project was green lit and put in an official roadmap by CPU features table. APU features table. The new Wraith Prism cooler was bundled with the Ryzen 7 X. The first of the series of Ryzen Threadripper products, introducing Precision Boost Overdrive technology, followed in August.
InAMD only launched quad core parts. Some dual-core Zen chips were branded as or Other improvements include a doubling of the L3 cache size, a re-optimized L1 instruction cache, a larger op. On September 20, AMD announced that third generation Ryzen Threadripper processors with core counts starting at 24 would be launched in November. The six- and eight-core processors have one core chiplet, while above this, the parts have two core chiplets.
LPDDR dual-channel. The first Ryzen 7X, and X processors debuted in early March and were generally well received by hardware reviewers. In the former category, the graph only goes as far as Zen 3.
The fourth-generation Ryzen chips will arrive at the end of this year, but AMD says that the full range of consumer products, which includes desktop CPUs, should all be available by the end of The enterprise product roadmap extends further into the future than the consumer version, a result of a longer product cycle and the financial investment long-term maps bring from customers.AMD reveals its 3rd-gen Ryzen 4000 mobile processor
The Zen 3-based CPUs will be built on the 7nm process, but it will be a more advanced version of the 7nm process AMD uses in its current products. These use the 5nm process node, which will likely also be used for the Zen 4-based consumer CPUs when they arrive. Load Comments User Comments: 55 Got something to say? Post a comment. AMD's CPU roadmap reveals Zen 3, Zen 4, and 5nm
AM4 Socket desktop.Everyone is interested in roadmaps — they give us a sense of an idea of what is coming in the future, and for the investors, it gives a level of expectation as to where the company might be in a year to five years.
AMD stated that its CPU roadmaps for its enterprise portfolio are going to offer more vision into the future than its consumer side for a couple of reasons. First, the enterprise market is built on a longer product cycle and it helps when planning these systems to know what is in the pipe publicly, but also from an investor standpoint where the enterprise market ultimately offers the bigger financial opportunity.
We asked AMD for clarification, and they stated that in this sort of graph, we should interpret it as the full stack of Genoa should be formally launched by the end of We also have Genoa listed as a 5nm product. Harder numbers about Milan and Genoa are expected to be unveiled closer to their respective launch times. In this graph, we see that the Zen 3 product here is on the far right, but so is the date — Does this mean Zen 3 for consumers is coming ?
So here comes a poignant question — what is going to come first in ? AMD makes a lot more money on its enterprise products than its consumer products, and while it enjoys a healthy performance lead in both, it really wants to push its market share in enterprise a lot more to drive home the bigger financial potential.

These components are, by and large, the Ryzen Mobile family of processors with Vega graphics but with the added Pro features listed above. We are likely to see OEMs that currently provide AMD A-Series PRO notebooks to offer updated versions with these new processors, as well as a series of new designs coming into the business and enterprise market.
